The Weekend Edit: 22nd June 2019

Happy Saturday! I hope you've had a good week? I’ve been working on a marketing strategy to transform the business of one client, and a new business plan for a second client - in between managing my hay fever symptoms as pollen levels have soared in the past few days. Anyone else suffer?

I’ve been trying really hard not to think about the Tory leadership contest. But with the choice made by MPs about the final two candidates making the ballot paper for party members to decide, it’s hard to ignore the brutal reality that Boris Johnson is likely to be our next Prime Minister.

Personally, I’m struggling to wrap my head around the logic that because the Brexit party topped the poll in the European elections, Tory MPs are reaching for a man they know is, like Trump, wholly unfit to lead. That’s why the views Jonathan Freedland expresses in his opinion piece for The Guardian are in tandem with my own. This week’s TV debate bought home a terrifying truth: one of these men will be PM. Or as Fintan O’Toole so aptly puts it, Boris Johnson is the fool who would play the king.

There are any number of ways to try to make sense of what’s going on in the world. One of the lenses I use is leadership. In the business world, there’s been a marked shift towards an authentic leadership style, or what Jim Collins calls Level 5 leadership. It’s the type of leadership modelled by Jacinda Ardern. And by Paul Polman, as I explain in How Unilever Is Leading With Purpose.

Harper’s Bazaar has an insightful piece from about where it all went wrong for Topshop (who just narrowly escaped administration). You may also find my article “There Was Banter, But I Meant No Offence,” Said Phillip Green of interest.

Finally, you probably know that I have a big interest in US politics, and my desire to see Trump removed from office rises daily. I’ve been closely following the Democratic primary race - which, to be honest, is a distraction from Brexit. There are currently 23 candidates vying to become the Democratic nominee in 2020. Who’s caught my attention is Senator Elizabeth Warren. I’m inspired by her thoughtful and progressive policies, and the fact she has a plan for just about everything. Plus I like her straight talking. Check out her videos on Instagram.
