6 Social Media Experts You Absolutely Must Follow
Confession time! When I first started my own business I found the whole world of social media marketing thoroughly confusing. There were so many social media experts to follow, creating prolific amounts of content, not all of which I understood. It took a while to figure out who were the true social media experts and who I should follow on a regular basis.
These are the criteria I used to identify my 6 ‘must follow’ social media experts:
- They must ‘walk the talk.’ By this I mean that they must be actively engaged on the key social media channels of their choice and building their following.
- They must be highly respected in their industry, for example invited to speak at key industry events like Social Media Marketing World.
- They must be continuously upgrading their own knowledge and testing different platforms and technologies.
The 6 social media experts I believed best met these three tests were:
1. Mike Stelzner Founder of Social Media Examiner, Mike shares high quality advice from his podcasts, blog posts and Blabs, as well as from his annual Social Media Marketing World conference. Check out my list of 7 Must Read Articles From Social Media Examiner. It was hard to narrow this list down!
2. Mark Schaefer
Mark is the thinking person's marketer. He literally wrote the book on social media marketing. Yes really. He's the author of Social Media Explained, in addition to four other best-selling marketing books that are used as texts by more than 50 universities. Mark is the founder of Schaefer Marketing Solutions, has two graduate degrees, a mentorship with Peter Drucker, and his blog is among the top five business blogs of the world. Mark Schaefer and his team has a stellar client list, working with organisations such as Adidas, Johnson & Johnson, IBM, Dell, and the U.S. Armed Forces.
3. Kim Garst
Kim is an incredibly accomplished social selling strategist (named one of Forbes’s Top 10 Social Media Influencers) and a best-selling author. Her blog is well-researched, offering valuable, easy to digest content to people new to social media as well as those who are more experienced. I have daily access to Kim through her Social Selling Inner Circle so I get to see how incredibly knowledgeable and kind she is at first hand. This makes her my very favourite social media expert.
4. Amy Porterfield
Amy is a social media marketing content-making machine. Between her podcasts, webinar, blog posts, and awesome tweets, there's no shortage of social knowledge to go around. Amy started her business life focused on Facebook but has steadily extended her expertise to cover how to run a successful online business. Amy’s is one of the few podcasts I listen to regularly.
5. Rebekah Radice
A Global Brand ambassador for Postplanner, what I love about Rebekah Radice’s blog is how she moves seamlessly between social media marketing strategy and tactics. Rebekah is highly accomplished at systems and planning, but where she really shines is engaging, communicating with and reaching her audience.
6. Jeff Bullas
There are people who provide social media advice, and then there are people who've actually built something sustainable with social media, and then provide advice based on that. Jeff Bullas is the latter. He's the real deal when it comes to social media, and the first social media expert I followed. Here’s why. He’s one of LinkedIn’s 25 Social Media Experts You Need to Know, he’s ranked at #11 on the “Top 50 most retweeted people on Twitter” with over 320,000 Twitter followers and his blog receives an astounding 5 million page views per year.
