BUILT TO SUCCEED

THE HOME OF The PURPOSE-DRIVEN ENTREPRENEUR

WELCOME!

I’m Denyse Whillier, and I have over 25 years’ experience of running and scaling businesses. Eight of these were spent as a CEO giving me first-hand experience of turning around a failing business and then scaling it.

Supporting purpose-driven, responsible business owners to gain the skills, confidence and network needed to scale their business is at the heart of what my business consultancy, Built To Succed, does. Built To Succeed™ is also the name of the unique approach I’ve developed to accomplish this.

My number one priority is to dramatically increase the number of purpose-driven businesses making a positive social impact and transform the reputation of business.

Denyse Whillier

Hi, I’m Denyse Whillier and my mission is to help purpose-driven entrepreneurs to unlock the potential in their business. On this website you'll find heaps of resources to help you to start, grow and scale your business. Enjoy!

For 8 years I was the CEO of a well-known UK brand, before leaving to become a business consultant and found my business consultancy, Built To Succeed. Trained at Cranfield School of Management, a world leading business school, I'm also an accredited coach with the Institute of Enterprise & Entrepreneurship.

Prior to becoming a CEO, I spent by 15 years in senior management roles, leading teams of 150 employees and managing a budget equivalent to £12 million today. What made these roles especially enjoyable were the campaigning and PR aspects. I coordinated and ran launch strategies for numerous highly successful campaigns, both at regional and national level. Highlights included lobbying MPs at the House of Commons, speaking at large conferences, being interviewed on the BBC and featuring in The Guardian and The Telegraph.

Wondering what I do as a business consultant? In a nutshell, I work with a portfolio of clients on strategy, planning and problem solving, and help them to develop business skills and knowledge. This work can range from designing a business model or marketing plan, to preparing cash flow forecasts and financial projections to determining which marketing techniques to use. I help clients to plan and implement projects, for example a re-brand, a new staffing structure or the brief for a new website.

I often draw on coaching and mentoring skills to help my clients to achieve success by focusing personal development: time management, self-sabotaging behaviours, finding clarity, decision making, and taking action.

Whether I'm working with an entrepreneurial start up, a business in turnaround or a large business, my consulting style is goals and results orientated. with an emphasis on improving cash flow. My focus is on building business and leadership skills, confidence and resilience. Without sacrificing purpose or profits.

Education: A degree in French and Spanish from Queen Mary College (part of the University of London) and a Masters degree in International Development from Leeds University.

Favourite Brands: Neptune Home and The White Company. It’s not just that I love their products, it’s the meticulous attention to detail and care the company takes to provide a first class customer experience at an accessible price.

Business Leaders: Paul Polman  and Blake Mycowskie. I love how Paul Polman and the Unilever leadership team have embedded the Global Goals and sustainability into their business plan; tackling social and environmental issues or causes that are relevant to their products, and make a positive difference to society. I am also a huge fan of Blake Mycowskie, the man behind TOMS Shoes and One for One, the revolutionary business model that marries fun, profit, and social good.

Favourite Campaign: The 2017 Heads Together campaign run by The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. This brilliantly executed, multi-channel campaign challenged the stigma around mental well-being, and inspired people to talk about their own mental health for the first time.

Icon: This has to be Nelson Mandela. I find the huge personal transformation he went through - from firebrand and activist to global statesman forged during his time imprisoned on Robben Island - inspirational.

Quote: “Education is the most powerful weapon with which you can change the world,” ~ Nelson Mandela.

The Business Book I Recommend Most: Jim Collins’ Good To Great. It’s a book I return to regularly because it contains so much wisdom.

Key To Success: Hard work, decency, staying true to your values and good business habits like updating your cash flow forecast and reviewing your sales pipeline and marketing plans weekly.

Favourite Ways Of Unwinding: Reading, writing, dancing, tennis, yoga, spending time with friends and walking along the beach at low tide. I’m fortunate to live a stone’s throw from the seaside.

Weekends: If I'm not down the beach, you'll find me exploring one of the historic market towns of Sussex where I live or hiking on the South Downs. Coffee and cake play an important part in my life, and I love baking. If I'm not out and about exploring, you'll find me curled up with a book.
