About Denyse Whillier
Strategic partner to purpose-led founders and leaders building the future we want. The strategic thinking Denyse developed over a twenty-five-year career - including eight years as a CEO - is the spine of The Purpose Company: a full-service strategic partner for leaders with one shared ambition, to build a better future for people and the planet.
Denyse Whillier is a strategist, advisor and founder of The Purpose Company. Born on the English south coast, she spent more than twenty-five years in London building and leading purpose-led organisations across the private, voluntary, and government sectors. She holds a Masters in International Development and a Diploma in Management Studies and studied strategic leadership at Cranfield School of Management. Her career has been shaped by one consistent thread: seeing the whole picture - strategy, brand, marketing, business growth, financial planning and workforce planning - and moving between those disciplines the way a CEO does, because that is exactly what she was.
Denyse's work rests on a core belief - that the world we want will be built by people who provide what the world needs most from its leaders: hope-centred strategy, grounded in a clear vision, visible pathways and the agency to act. Everything she offers at The Purpose Company - from strategic planning and business coaching to consulting and advisory services - is built from that conviction and from the experience of leading purpose-led organisations through transformation.
Experience
Denyse's career is the story of a strategic thinker whose instinct has always been to stand back, understand what's really going on, and build the path forward.
Her formative professional experience began with operational leadership at Southwark Council, where she was responsible for three older people's care homes and five day centres - two of them specialist dementia services - with more than 150 employees and a budget at the time of £10 million. Managing services across multiple sites, within tight budgets, and in one of London's most diverse boroughs, taught her the discipline of turning strategic intent into day-to-day delivery. It was here that she learned what integrated management actually means: workforce planning, financial stewardship, service quality and stakeholder relationships, all held together by a clear sense of purpose.
From Southwark, she moved to UNISON - then the UK's largest trade union, representing 1.3 million members - where she worked as a National Officer in the Health Group. She deputised for the Head of the Health Group, represented UNISON in meetings with MPs and government officials at the Department of Health, and served on the national negotiating team developing a new job evaluation scheme for the NHS. She also led on issues affecting women, mental health, domestic violence and the voluntary sector. It was at UNISON that she worked on the implementation of the MacPherson Report - the landmark inquiry into institutional racism following the murder of Stephen Lawrence - in London's public services. That work deepened her understanding of how systemic change is designed and delivered at scale.
The role that brought everything together was eight years as CEO of Age UK in London - a glass cliff appointment, in the way women are so often handed leadership of organisations in crisis. What she found was four charities that had merged on paper but never integrated, a significant budget shortfall, and a relationship with the primary funder that had broken down. She had a choice: cut services and jobs to fit a shrinking budget, or find a way to grow. She chose growth.
Within three years she had tripled both revenue and staff. She rebuilt trust with funders, secured funding from the Department for Work and Pensions and the European Social Fund, and developed a joint venture with the local council and PCT for an integrated community resource centre. She built a predominantly female leadership team and achieved Investors in People accreditation by embedding what would now be called JEDI principles - justice, equity, diversity and inclusion - in the organisation's governance, employment practices, business relationships and decision-making.
The strategic planning process she developed during those years - the discipline of understanding where you are, where you're going, and building a realistic path between the two - is the foundation of everything she now brings to her clients.
After leaving her CEO role, Denyse started a boutique business consultancy and quickly discovered that the founders and leaders she most wanted to work with were navigating the same challenge she had faced - building something they cared about deeply, without the strategic support to make it happen. The Purpose Company, a full-service strategic partner for purpose-led businesses, is the result.

The Purpose Company
The roots of The Purpose Company go back further than Denyse's CEO years. A transformative trip to Kenya in her early twenties - where she saw first-hand the power of education to lift people out of poverty and unlock opportunities for marginalised groups - inspired her Masters in International Development and a lifelong commitment to what would later become the Sustainable Development Goals. That commitment runs through everything The Purpose Company does.
The Purpose Company is Denyse's response to her belief: that the world we want gets built by purpose-led companies and trusted leaders, and that building a pipeline of both is one of the most important things we can do at a hinge moment when this has never mattered more.
Strategy is the spine of The Purpose Company. Every engagement starts with strategic clarity - where a business stands, where it's heading, and the choices that will shape what comes next - and everything else flows from there: brand, marketing, business growth, financial planning and workforce planning. It is the integrated way a CEO thinks, applied to every client relationship.
A strategic aim of The Purpose Company is to work with clients that advance the Sustainable Development Goals. While not every client would describe their work in those terms, the commitment is the same. Purpose and values guide everything they do. Across Denyse's client work, six patterns emerge - what she calls The Purpose Landscape - mapping the ways purpose-led businesses show up in the world.
Strengthening the everyday economy - sustaining the fabric of daily life with integrity and care. The essential goods, services, and infrastructure that keep our communities running, accounting for over half of all UK employment.
Creating a fairer world - opening up access, opportunity, and participation so that more people get to be part of what's being built.
Helping people thrive - supporting people to live well, whether through what they eat, how they move, how they rest, what they learn, or the care they receive.
Protecting the planet - stewarding natural systems, restoring what's been damaged, and building businesses that work with the environment rather than against it.
Making life beautiful - making life richer through culture, creativity, and extraordinary experiences.
Powering the purpose ecosystem - providing the professional and business support that purpose-led founders and leaders need to thrive. The work that makes the other five possible.
Services
Denyse works with purpose-led founders and leaders through four services - all built from the same strategic foundation:
Purpose-Led Strategic Planning - the deep work of stepping back and seeing clearly where a business stands, where it's heading, and the strategic choices that will shape what comes next. This is the discipline Denyse developed as a CEO and refined through years of working with founders across every stage of growth. Whether a founder is building their first strategic plan or revisiting one that no longer fits, this is about creating the clarity and structure their ambition deserves - through stakeholder conversations, scenario planning, phased roadmaps and a plan that lives and breathes beyond the session that created it.
Purpose-Led Business Coaching - a relationship that builds over time with ongoing monthly strategic support. She begins with a half-day session to understand where the business is and where the founder wants it to be, then develops a vision for the next three to five years and a plan to get there. Monthly sessions, a weekly check-in, and availability between sessions when something urgent comes up. This is the ongoing work of growing a business and developing as a leader - month by month, grounded in purpose and values, with someone alongside who brings strategic depth and lived CEO experience.
Purpose-Led Business Consulting - defined projects with clear deliverables. A client comes with a challenge - a brand that needs repositioning, finances that need a fresh eye, a market opportunity that needs validating - and Denyse works through it with them. By the end, they have something concrete in their hands that they can act on straight away, rooted in their purpose and built around their vision of what success looks like.
Purpose-Led Strategic Counsel - a thinking partnership for more experienced business leaders making decisions that don't have simple answers. Periods of significant uncertainty when the ground has shifted, major transitions - the moments when what a leader chooses will shape the years ahead, and they need someone alongside who can hold the bigger picture while they work through each choice.
Occasionally Denyse acts as a Fractional CEO, providing experienced CEO-level leadership to purpose-led businesses that need someone who can step in and lead - whether during an unexpected absence, a scaling transition, or a period of significant growth.
Client Work and Results
Denyse works with founders and leaders building with purpose and ambition, across a range of sectors and stages of growth. Selected examples include:
A PR professional who specialised in sustainable textiles after redundancy during maternity leave. Through ongoing business coaching over three years, she grew from five retained clients to projected revenue exceeding £500,000 a year, expanded her team of Account Managers following a rebrand, and is working on B Corp accreditation.
A premium lifestyle brand generating $276,000 a month against costs requiring $380,000 to break even. Denyse provided a consulting engagement that produced a comprehensive turnaround roadmap, showing how a series of improvements - most at minimal cost - could take monthly revenue to $544,000 through disciplined execution of changes already within reach.
A yoga studio owner who wanted to move to southern Spain without losing the business she'd spent twelve years building. Through strategic advisory, she transformed a single-location studio into a business that could operate across borders - with an employee share scheme, online classes, a retreat programme, and a teacher training qualification.
A private wealth law practice, advised over eight years through multiple acquisitions and an eventual sale. Denyse stepped in as Fractional CEO during a period of the founder's illness, working two and a half days a week for two months - a seamless transition made possible by the depth of the existing relationship.

Methodology and Frameworks
The founders and leaders Denyse works with share something in common: they're building the future they want, and they need the strategic support to make it happen. Gallup's research on Global Leadership confirms that hope is the single most important quality people look for in their leaders. That insight runs through every framework Denyse has developed.
Strategic Hope is Denyse's proprietary methodology - a school of practice grounded in Rick Snyder's Hope Theory, which defines hope as the combination of goals (a clear vision), pathways (visible routes forward), and agency (the belief that your efforts will make a difference). Denyse integrates this with Michael Steger's research on meaning and flourishing and William Damon's definition of purpose as an intention to accomplish something that is meaningful to the self and consequential for the world beyond the self.
Hope-centred strategy is how this methodology is applied in businesses, organisations and institutions. It is the approach Denyse brings to every client engagement - developed through her own experience as a CEO and refined through years of working with clients across every stage of growth.
Purpose-Led Leadership is Denyse's leadership framework - ethical leadership in its fullest expression. It draws on three overlapping traditions: Level 5 Leadership (Jim Collins), Authentic Leadership (Bill George), and Principled Leadership, alongside the Sustainable Development Goals. A purpose-led leader operates from a stable ethical centre, with a published purpose statement that sets out a specific positive impact, integrates purpose into the strategy and operations of their organisation, and makes it transparent to stakeholders.
The Purpose Landscape maps the six ways purpose-led businesses show up in the world - from strengthening the everyday economy and creating a fairer world, through to protecting the planet and making life beautiful. Purpose is far more inclusive than the ESG lens often suggests. The Purpose Landscape helps clients see where their work sits - not just in environmental or social terms, but in the fuller sense of what is meaningful to them and consequential for the world around them.

Community Leadership
Denyse has served as Chair of Lancing Parish Council since May 2024. Lancing is England's largest village, with a population of 19,000 on the West Sussex coast - a place of remarkable natural assets including the internationally rare Widewater Lagoon, Lancing Ring nature reserve, three kilometres of coastline, and the South Downs.
She approaches the role as a strategic steward - safeguarding the Council's mission and values, ensuring that decisions and long-term strategies stay aligned with the community's foundational purpose, and balancing the interests of a politically diverse council with the needs of the village and its residents. It is the same strategic discipline she brings to her client work: seeing the whole picture, holding the bigger purpose in view, and building the conditions for good decisions to be made.
Denyse has led the Council through a period of significant change and ambition. Drawing on the Lancing: Now and Into the Future consultation - which engaged residents in shaping a shared vision for the village - she has steered the development of a community-led strategic plan focused on developing a beach and leisure economy, sustainable spaces, investment in young people, and a thriving local economy.
As Chair of the Climate and Nature Working Group, she leads an ambitious environmental agenda: developing a community garden and orchard in partnership with Brighton Permaculture Trust and Sussex Wildlife Trust, progressing plans for a visitor centre at Widewater Lagoon, supporting Apron Creative, a new regenerative community farm, and actively championing the village's natural assets as resources for the whole community. In 2025, Lancing Parish Council was one of only six Gold medal winners in the RHS South & South East in Bloom competition. In 2026, it was awarded Gold by the judging panel for the second consecutive year - the result of a strategy that connected environmental stewardship with community pride.
