Start Here

The first in a short series about who I am and how I work. It starts with a question every purpose-led founder and leader recognises, whatever stage of growth they're at. If you've ever put everything on the line to build something you believe in, start here.

I will never forget my first morning as a business owner. I commuted thirteen stairs to the back bedroom - home to my new business empire. The house was silent, save for the chirping sparrows in the holly bush outside my window. And the thought struck me: what have I done?

For the twenty-five years before that morning, I'd built a career. Senior leadership roles across three sectors. Eight years as a CEO. A steady salary, a London home, lovely holidays, an active social life. I was putting all of this on the line to build something of my own, and I was fired with determination to succeed. Starting a business could not be as hard as turning around a struggling organisation and delivering results through an economic recession. Could it?

You might recognise this feeling? That mixture of excitement and doubt sitting so close together you can barely tell them apart. The conviction that you're doing the right thing, alongside the quiet voice asking whether you're sure.

I've since learned that every founder I've worked with has had their version of this moment. It comes in different forms at different stages - but the feeling underneath is remarkably consistent. You care deeply about what you're building. You believe in where you're heading. And yet there are moments when the future feels genuinely uncertain and you wonder whether you've made the right call.

This was how Kristy felt when we started working together. Kristy runs an education business in Singapore, unlocking the power of literacy for children struggling with reading, writing, and spelling. Her belief is that reading ignites a child's imagination so they can believe anything is possible. She'd been running the business for three years, turning over $60,000 a year. Passionate about the mission, stuck at a plateau. We got the business growing, and soon she had more work than she could handle. Then doubt set in when she needed to hire her first employee. The question that kept her awake was whether the business could afford it. I showed her the projected revenue, the stable cash flow forecast, and the working capital.

Seeing this gave her the confidence to act. Sometimes that's all it takes - seeing the numbers laid out clearly by someone who's looked at them with fresh eyes.

A high-end homeware brand went viral after an unexpected feature in the New York Times. The momentum was extraordinary - orders flooding in, press attention building, everything a founder dreams of. But funding the step-up in production to meet the extra demand was another matter entirely. If you've ever experienced fast growth, you'll know that the cash flow challenge can be as daunting as the opportunity is exciting. The brave moment was choosing to move to a customer-funded model, where customers in effect pay for your operations, reducing reliance on external funding and putting growth on a sustainable footing.

Two founders. Different sectors, different stages, different countries. Both building purpose-led companies they care about deeply. Both facing a moment where they needed to be brave - and where having someone alongside them who could see the pathways forward made all the difference.

I help purpose-led founders and leaders build the future they want. Whether you're just getting started, scaling fast, or standing at a crossroads, the work is the same: finding a clear vision you believe in, opening up pathways you can act on, and building the confidence - through the accumulation of evidence as well as encouragement - that your efforts are leading somewhere meaningful.

That's what I do. That's what The Purpose Company is. A full-service strategic partner that purpose-led founders and leaders rely on to build trusted, effective, enduring organisations. At a moment when that matters more than it ever has.
